Exclamation Handbag has strong perfume odor.....Please help!!!!

I'm sooooo aggravated right now, you guys don't even know. Well, lately I was trying to find this specific Dooney and Bourke bag that I've seen on QVC. I can't seem to find a bag on Ebay where the seller is completely honest as far as the description.

This ebayer listed this item as Mint condition which I thought meant pretty new like. I personally asked them through email prior to bidding/winning the condition of item. Their response was excellent, no stains etc, no odors.

I get the bag, it's in pretty good shape. Inside is super clean, looks unused on the inside. So far, the leather trim has some water spots-which they didn't mention. Luckily, it's nothing that noticeable. However, the major issue is this ODOR. I can't tell if it's freaking febreeze or what, but something has to have been sprayed in and on this bag. At first, I didn't think much of it, but its becoming more and more intolerable and noticeable. Its to the point where I can't stand it to be in the same room with me. I contacted seller, and she denies spraying a darn thing in it. I think she is a LIER. I do have allergies and I'm extra sensitive to fragrances and such, so probably not super bad to the average person, but I don't know what to do. I want the bag, and I'm already in process of getting a discount, I just need to get rid of this perfumy odor. I really don't want to have to send it back, or sell it.

Any ideas? I know some of things you can use, but perhaps I don't know how long to try them. Thanks

Oh no I'm so sorry!! Hmm, I really have no idea other than time that will make the smell go away. Do you have a screened in porch, or protected outdoor area that you can leave the bag? That way it will get some air and hopefully get some of the odor out, without having to get it wet or dirty from the elements.

I had this happen once... but it wasn't perfume smell, it was moth ball smell.

I would just try airing it out. Or you could get some of those odor neutralizing "candies" to put inside the bag.

Completely agree with BRS because I've had the same problem and I left it to air out for a while and I could barely notice the strong odor that it had before.
For every fake bag you buy, you're supporting terrorism, child labor, and other cruel things.

Maybe you could try pouring some Baking Soda in a sock and place it on the inside of the purse while airing it out, it may be worth a try!

Thanks for the replies everyone! Well, unfortunately don't have a screened in porch. I do have a porch, so when its not so hot I guess sitting it out some where it wont' get dirty or wet would help. I guess I don't have the patience for this, but I'm going to have to , or just get rid of the bag. Airing it out is what I started doing today. For about a day I put some baking soda in a dish and set inside bag...zipped it up, but maybe I didn't leave it long enough. The only thing that got some of the "inside" odor out was stuffing white tissue paper in bag for hours and hours. I tried wrapping the tissue around outside of bag as well, and the darn thing almost smells worse to me..on the outside that is. So, yeah just trying the airing out thing. I wonder how long it will actually take before most of the strong odor goes away? I want to use the bag, and I don't feel that's best unless I want to go around with a headache, itchy eyes and nose etc. The odor neutralizing candles sounds very good too! Has anyone tried charcoal? My mom mentioned that. Maybe put a few pieces in a dish and let it sit in bag for a bit. I think now the outside of the bag is the worst. The straps are vachetta leather, so I don't know how the odor will come out of that. Surely, this ebayer did not spray leather with Febreeze or something else! I can actually wipe off the body of the bag with some ivory soap and water, but just haven't. I see why in a way you might as well dish the money out and by a brand new bag, this is really annoying.

Here are the candies: Lovin My Bags

If you try using charcoal, it has to be activated charcoal. It usually comes in powder form.

Thanks for the link, but isn't that also a fragrance? I'm sensitive to most of those, so not sure if that would work. Just thought of that. Yeah, I only have pieces of charcoal.

Well, I decided to file a claim on Ebay for a refund. It's been a week and the smell is almost worse IMO. I have no clue with this crazy person sprayed on this bag, but someone sprayed something on it. It has been so bad, I had to take medicine for allergies. My throat was closing up, and thank god for Benadryl. I can't believe this is happening. I finally thought I got a good deal on the perfect bag, but due to perfume, I can't use it. Perhaps in time the odor will fade, but I do not have patience for this. People make me sick. But again, thanks for all the tips.

Hmm, I'm pretty bummed. So, yeah this would be my luck for sure. I absolutely love this D&B handbag, and I decided to send back to seller on Ebay because of the perfumy odor. I gave up after trying different things. Maybe I didn't have enough patience. This my third issue trying to buy a D&B bag. Maybe it's not meant to be then. : ) I guess its worth paying out money for a brand new one instead of getting used. I'm attaching my picture of my handbag. It's such a shame something this classy and pretty had to go back because of an odor, that wasn't even a bad odor; just too strong.http://i31.tinypic.com/aesd8h.jpg

It might sound crazy, but try putting dry rice in it. It works really well for helping to bring up stains in delicate fabric and it seems to soak up smells as well. At the very least, it shouldn't hurt anything. Good luck!

Oh dear...sorry to hear about your problem
This happened to me on Ebay when I bought a bag, but with cigarette smoke. I tried everything. Baking soda, rice, charcoal, nothing worked...I washed the bag's lining..and in the end I threw it out.
The buyer said her house was smoke free, could the bag have really picked up that much smoke from being out and about...well I would try the lovin my bags candies...but if the smell bothers you that much...you might be fighting a losing battle, as most of the products will have a smell as well.

I'm so sorry - this is too much trouble to go to. I hope you can get a refund - there's nothing worse than suffering with allergies and you deserve better for your money!
