Smile Searched!!! Travelling with Designer Handbags/clothing,...

Just thought I'd tell all you out there about an experience a friend of mine just had. She and her husband were on their way from Sweden to vacation in Dubai. They were stopped in the airport at Amsterdam and everything of theirs was searched because she was carrying a designer handbag. They buy all designer name clothing and she is an avid collector of designer handbags. They held them until an expert could come and then every piece of clothing, etc was authenticated by the airport's expert. She told me that the woman in front of them was not so lucky,......she was carrying a replica handbag and was fined over $1000.00 and they took the handbag. Is this happening all over??? For people on a budget who by their designer items in used condition from 2nd hand shops, eBay, etc.......how can they be sure that they are carrying the genuine article?? Or for those of us who get gifts of designer items. Guess it's not safe to buy "gently used" items anymore. So when you travel abroad,......be sure that whatever designer items you have,........you have purchased yourself,.....new,......from the retailer.

I wonder what training the people checking items at the airport have. People who aren't avid collectors or lovers of luxury brand names don't always necessarily know if an item is authentic or not. LV is one thing, but a Chloe bag or a YSL bag... those aren't items that are as popular, so it's hard for a lot of people to look at that and think "oh that's authentic." I personally think they should start with the people selling the items, not with the people buying them. You can't always fault the buyer because sometimes they just don't know.

I disagree that it's not safe to purchase pre-loved items. If you're a true lover of luxury items then you know what to look for, and have places online, like here at TBF, where you can get help from people to determine whether or not the bag is authentic.

That seriously happens? A person comes up to authenticate your stuff at an airport if you're carrying designer luggage? What if your bag is really authentic? Would you let them just take it? No way!

I've never heard of this. When I was coming back from Costa Rica, the only thing they were searching for were Cuban cigars.
I guess I can kind of understand, especially since it was in Europe. But I agree with lils, they need to focus on where people are getting them from. And yes, there are places where you can trust that you are buying authentic pre-owned handbags online.

I can believe this because I know in Paris it is illegal to own a replica handbag because designers are such a big part in the industry there. You can even go to jail. But I agree with focusing on where they bought the replica handbags from because that is the real problem.
For every fake bag you buy, you're supporting terrorism, child labor, and other cruel things.

I agree with everyone who says they should spend more efforts focusing on those selling the bags, as that is the real crime in my opinion.
