Smile MMM Leather Slouchy Hobo vs. L.A.M.B Grant Nylon Hobo

This odd handbag silhouette is nowhere near being called a classic, but apparently more than one designer house digs the oversized, trapezoid-ish tote bag look. They’re both black, edgy, and somehow remind me of a giant fortune cookie, but who exactly came up with this concept first?

The Grant Large Nylon Hobo is one of the latest totes to hit the L.A.M.B scene. A puffy nylon silhouette is held together by an interwoven leather handle and decorated with vertical zippered pockets up front. Prior to L.A.M.B’s release, Maison Martin Margiela had this idea printed on their sketchpads first. Their version of the oversized Leather Slouchy Hobo lacks zippers up front (they’re actually built onto its sides instead), and features a sturdier silhouette; a more defined braided shoulder strap and cool tassel detailing.

Both feature a grey interior lining, additional zippers inside, and an eye-catching look that you wont run into too often. Margiela’s all-leather version retails for $995 versus L.A.M.B’s nylon bag that goes for a decent $225. I wouldn’t call either one a replica of the other, but they definitely got a pretty similar idea going on here. What’s your input on these tote bags, and which of the two makes your pick?

Definitely prefer the MMM bag...it looks more classic.
Although i would not buy either one because of the lack of a clear defined shape.

I also prefer the MM bag. But that's because I prefer leather hobos over Nylon anyday. And I think $225 is too much for Nylon.

But like Fedup, I'm also not interested in buying either of them. Too plain and I'm not fond of the shape.

Margiela’s all-leather version is nicer looking than L.A.M.B's but I can't see myself wearing either one.

It's like they deconstructed the MMM and used the pattern. I love the style!
