Default Messenger Bags - Opinions... Suggestions?

I am in the market for a new messenger style bag and who knows bags better than you gals!?
I'll show you my requirements first, then a couple of options I am leaning toward.
of course I would love to hear any additional suggestions as well!

My requirements are fairly specific, but not difficult (IMO ):

    - medium sized -- nothing ginormous, but also not small like a MAC crossbody. let's say 'notebook sized'.

    - lays pretty flat against the body, like 2-3 inches deep. i've already got hips and don't need a wide bag sticking out to accentuate them!

    - an adjustable or removable strap with a shorter shoulder strap is preferable, but not necessarily a deal-breaker.

    - also a zip top rather than flap is preferable. again, not a deal breaker.

    - price: 500-ish, of course less is even better.
for me, this type of bag is more about everyday wear and function, so nothing too delicate and pricey that needs to be pampered. also, i am not opposed to bay/bonz, so if you want to recommend something that could be found there at a nice price, i am all ears!

What I have found and am considering:

    * Belen Echandia Whisper To Me Midi (has removable messenger and shoulder strap not shown)

    .

    * RM Easy Rider Satchel

    .

    * Tano Mona Lethal (really diggin the fold over trend and love the option here.)

    so, whadda ya think?

Sorry Chickie, i don't particularly like the first 2.

How about a Foley + Corrina City or mid-City tote. It is a gorgeous bag, it can lay flat, can be folded over as a flap, worn messenger style and is under $500.
here is a pic i found on luna boston:

I also like the idea FedUp has, the Foley + Corina is a very nice suggestion for what your criteria is....

I love my Foley + Corinna City tote but unless they made the strap longer it is not really a good bag for cross-body wear.

You could always buy a separate leather strap that is longer....

Have to disagree on this one. I had a Mid City and I used to wear it cross body. I actually found that the strap was a little long. I guess it all depends on your height/weight. It isn't particularly good for cross body though because it has to be folded over to do so, which means you can't fit much in it, and you'd have to unfold it to get in it.

How about the Cole Haan saddle bag. it is available in black also...although i am not sure if it is big enough for you. You can get it at endless.com.

Yes you CAN wear it cross-body but the strap is not long enough to wear messenger style. I wore my F+C City cross-body when we went to King's Island and it was perfect but it wouldn't be good for a laptop/notebook.
I didn't mean that you couldn't wear it cross-body at all. Guess I should have been a little clearer.

interesting, because i thought the strap might be a bit too short for me. i keep going back and forth on this bag. i don't know that i really like the handles and i think it is too deep for me unfolded, but then folded over it looks a bit cumbersome. i really need to get my hands on one to decide. i know NM carries them, but i always forget to look for F+C when i go to the mall. i usually get swept up in all the other bags that i am obsessing over at the moment!

Have you looked at the Orla Kiely handbags they do some great across the body bags? they always look neat but trendy.
