Grin PLEASE HELP! WANT TO START A USED LUXURY GOODS STORE

now i've had this idea for some time now, it sound like such a nice dream!

there are NO luxury used goods stores in Sydney that i know of, and i mean, we're not a SMALL place, we have all the usual luxury botiques and everything, and i've always been someone who thinks "gee i wish i could buy luxury goods cheaper, or gee i have some stuff that i regret buying and im out of money for groceries!" haha and last time i was in Hong Kong, they had a 2nd hand store in every suburb!

What i would like help with is, whether anyone is already in the BUSINESS, or they know how it works, because when it comes to operating a business, i am pretty stupid. haha

heres what's holding me back right now:
    1. Im not a professional on authenicating the luxury bags, althrough i've read all your threads on how to differenitate between a fake and real chanel/lv/gucci, im just not confident. could the internet give me all the answers to authenicating luxury handbags!?

    2. The MONEY. haha i mean, i'd need heaps of money to start with right!? i would have to PURCHASE all the 2nd handbags firstly before i start up a shop.
I do know a friend who would invest in me, but only when im confident will i approach them.

    3. How much money do i buy the bags off the people for? Say the original price of the LV bag is $2000, should i buy it for no more that $500 to gain a profit of $500 when i sell it out for $1000!?

    4. What if people try to scam me!? there are nasty people out there.

    ANY THOUGHTS BAG EXPERTS?!
i treat this forum as a bible with all the answers haha

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THE ADVICE! :)

No one has responded to your thread yet, so I thought maybe I could offer some advice. I don't own a business but I can tell you that it would not be easy. Your biggest concern would be authentication issues. If you are not familiar with the bags that you are selling, then there's no way you're going to succeed at something like this. You have to KNOW the bags. For example, one of the people behind Let-Trade used to work for LV. So they know authentic LV when they see it. You have to remember that there are some pretty good copies out there, not all fakes are immediately obvious. Sometimes even LV employees have to rip a bag apart in order to confirm it is a fake. You could easily run the risk of unknowingly selling a fake to a customer, which would be very bad for business. Now as far as the whole money thing goes, you could always start your business out online (whether it be ebay, another auction site, or your own site). Start things small and then work your way up to a larger clientele that would help support an actual store. I wouldn't know what to tell you about how much to buy/sell a bag for. It would all depend on the market (what someone is willing to pay) and your overhead costs. There wouldn't be any real set amount. But another way to do it would be to have a consignment system set up. You sell stuff for other people, keeping a percentage of the profit. And finally, of course there are people out there that want to scam you. Business is a risk and if you want to play the game then you have to take the risk. Of course there are such things as insurance and small claims lawsuits.
Obviously, I'm not an expert on these things... but this is my opinion. Hopefully it helps you. I'm doubtful, however, that you would be able to find enough info on the internet that would help you in authenticating things. You need to see, touch, smell, and inspect every inch of designer handbags to learn what is authentic and what is not. And even then, you still run the risk of being wrong.

That's a really good idea, BRS. I kind of did something similar but then I switched to things like ebay because setting up a site is really kind of complicated especially if you don't know what you're doing exactly. My personal online business was not that successful at first but when I switched to things like etsy, ebay, and amazon it worked out much better for me. Good luck!
If love is the answer, what is the question?
