Default What do you look for when you shop for a bag?

Hi everyone, I'm a art/design student that doesn't have much money to spend on a nice designer bag. I'm doing a research on portable personal items storage. This is a great place since everyone has so much insight on the "bags" topic! so please help me out with this guys, thanks so much before hand!

So when I look for a bag(either handbag or a tote) I just want it too be clean and simple designed, well function(convertible style, shoulder bag/handbag/satchel etc.) , durable at a suitable price (say less than $200). It's a bag that fits into my lifestyle which is so design and style emphasized and I personally love designs that are smart and multi-functioned(the mm8 beach mat/tote great example), and when i see a bag that fits everything I'm asking for I'll simply know That's IT! I wanna get that.

So I'm curious what do you look for in a bag, according to your lifestyle , say from work to gym to night-out, personal preference for materials? If you don't mind telling me your profession that would be greater! Thanks again!!

I really like a tote bag, since I don't like to fuss with a difficult fastening system. I like to be able to fit the straps over my shoulder but I also like to be able to hand carry the bag. I like a soft fabric or leather.
And it has to have that "rich" look to it.

Just get something that fits your needs.. if you need lots of space get a bigger bag, if not then get a little bag maybe with extra pockets and things..

they whole thing about designer bags is quailty and the design.. so just pick something you like and could use everyday or from time to time!

My main conditions for a bag in general are: shoulder bag, zip top, and flat straps. I hate rolled leather handles; they really dig into the arm/shoulder after a while and are not that comfortable. I'm too paranoid to use anything other than a zip top - I like my bags to be closed so I don't have to worry about anyone reaching in! I also greatly prefer shoulder bags over handbags because then my hands are free if I need them!

The only hand-held bag I have and most likely will ever have is the speedy. It's just such a great shape (and was my first brand-new LV) that I won't ever give it up lol.
    Now on a BAN!

The first thing it has to be for me is stylish...then I think about function. I prefer my bags to be shoulder bags and roomy, but I do have a few hand carry bags. I find I don't carry them as much. Then, I won't buy a bag the same color as I already have that serves pretty much the same function. So, for example, I have a handheld louis Travoli, so I wouldn't buy a speedy with the monogram canvas, because they are almost the same, imo, and i would always have to choose which one to take. But, I could get a Louis monogram neverful, because that is a shoulder bag.....You would die if you knew how much time and thought actually went into these decisions for me!!!!LOL

As far as price goes...I will pay more for something that I think is a classic and I can use forever. If it is a wild color, or very trendy purse, I don't spend as much.

For me the biggest factor is usability. Is it a bag I'll use a couple of times a year, or only for dressy occasions? If so, I probably don't choose it at this point in my collecting. Right now I want bags I can use everyday. I usually choose shoulder bags that zip closed so that I have my hands free for my kids and I don't have to worry about my wallet disappearing out of it. I choose bags on the larger size because as a mom I'm always having to cart around lots of stuff.

Very helpful ! I didn't realized some of the needs until you brought them up! How about the convertibility of a bag? say you can turn it into something else? I recently find the Japanese Furoshiki very interesting! What do you think? it's very environmental friendly too!

I love Furoshiki (was first fascinated with it in '08).

I also love convertible bags. I actually have mine posted up (gray West bag). It comes with two handles and can be worn three ways.

Here is what I look for:
-color of bag that goes with just about anything I have on e.g. black (also hides stain well)
    -quality leather (soft is great)
    -reasonable price for its quality
    -classic look
    -size (generous space)
-inner compartments to keep things relatively organized
-must be a shoulder bag or can at least convert to one
-love if the lining is interesting
    -exterior pockets are a must
    -quality hardware but lightweight
    -easily accessible to inside contents
-prefer vertical height to barrel shape

(does not have to be a premier designer bag)

It honestly depends on whether or not I will be using it for school.

If I am, it has to be a shoulder bag. Preferably a tote, but if not it must be roomy and deep. I prefer darker colors for my school bags because the dirt shows less. I won't spend much on a school bag (< $30) because it gets beat up easily and there is the possibility of theft.

If it is not for school, I prefer handbags. I like bags that are compartmentalized and have pockets; I like being able to organize everything! I have enough bags in neutral colors so now I want to concentrate on buying bags in different colors and patterns.

This may sound odd, but I don't like gold hardware. I prefer silver hardware. I'll buy a bag with gold hardware if I really love other aspects of it and it isn't available with silver hardware.

Hmm... for an everyday bag, I usually look for something on the smaller side. I'm really not in to huge bags unless I will be using it for school (in which case a tote style is preferable). I guess I mainly look for color and ease of use. I don't necessarily need tons of pockets because I don't tend to carry that much stuff around on a regular basis. So... yeah... I guess my decision is mostly based on the outward appearance of the bag.

How about the social statement you may wanna display through ur personal storage(a bag or some sort ), like my fd likes it to be eclectic style to show that she's not following mainstream trend and she cares about the story behind the bag say if it's a handmade bag by through fair trade organization from artists in the asia, she would love it. of course it should look cool and stylish. But the meaning behind the item says a lot about your identity and personality too. Would you think so?

I agree with bags being personal statements (as much as clothing can be). It's also great to own a bag that isn't mass produced. I admit to having both. Comfort is really important whatever the case may be.

    Always this four:
    1) Design (classic, shoulder straps, prefer with feet, if size suits me)
    2) Functionality (lightweight, enough compartments for my needs, easily accessible, darker color/neutral)
    3) Quality (soft but hardy leather, tight stitching, good hardware, great customer care)
    4) Longevity (is it a timeless design, can lasts for 10 or more years)
Not much of a statement maker with bags unless it says chic and elegant lady

I look at how its going to fit into my life. Is it easy to carry if I have my hands full. Will it fit into my locker at work.

I absolutely wont buy a bag if it doesnt have inner pockets that I can put my keys in. My new Juicy tote has only a small pocket inside, but it works.

Also I usually go for black or brown bags so I can mix them with almost any outfit without clashing.

Usually I start with the ZING factor and then see if it fills a unique spot in my current collection. If I already have a bag that's too similar than I can't get it.

THEN I have to look at functionality and usability and PRICE.
