Default Anyone else get mad at parents with out-of-control kids?

Hmm... I think Mr BRS doesn't want to ever have kids now. LOL! No, seriously. We were having a day full of run-ins with little terrors. For example, we went to lunch with my mom to this fairly nice restaurant. Sitting in the booth behind us was this couple that had an extremely hyperactive kid. He was jumping up and down on the seat, stabbing the wall with his fork, yelling at the top of his lungs, etc etc. All of this was because he wanted to go play this video game. Well anyway, at one point he tried to climb up onto the top edge of the seat and shimmy across to get past his dad (and get out of the booth). He then slid down and got wedged between the back of the seat and his dad's back. His legs were flailing about in the air right next to my mom's head. She just about got conked! His mom repeatedly told him to stop, but it was apparent that the kid knew he could get his way if he just kept at it. And, of course, his mom eventually walked him over to the video game so he could play it.

Does anyone else get pissed when they are trying to eat and something like this happens? Or am I just an awful person for thinking these things? I was actually hoping that there was really something wrong with this kid that would explain his bad behavior... but unfortunately, I think it was just bad parenting.

No, you're normal. I don't understand it, either.. I don't understand a parent just sitting there letting their kid run wild, with the possibility of hurting themselves or others, while they just ignore them. It's rude, but it's also potentially dangerous.

You are not the awful person...the parents of the spoiled BRAT are the awful people!! That is one thing that drives me insane! I want to say so bad if you want people to like your kid then make them behave! I have friends that are the same way with their kids...it is so bad. I'm like I didn't/don't let my kids behave that way so I sure as h*ll don't want to be around someone else's little brat that can't behave!

I guess I needed to vent as well. LOL! Thanks bRs!

Yeah, I don't see how parents let their kids behave like that...

I think parents who take their kids to restaurants are brave! In both a good and bad way.

I have a two year old and everytime we go out with him anything can happen! We always expect the worst but most of the time he has pleasantly surprised us. We've never taken him to eat in a restaurant since he's been able to walk and run cause we know he'll get bored and would want to run around and it won't be fun for us or the other diners. We usually go to parks with cafes or child friendly cafes where he is allowed to play.

OMG, we went to the zoo on his birthday and he threw a tantrum and just lay on the ground with people walking over him. I had to walk away and ignore him until he calmed down. Sometimes, even with our best efforts, kids will get out of control. They are tuned to be that way. It's how a parent manages the situation that doesn't let it get out hand.

^^^ Obviously they weren't handling the situation very well. I mean, they did eventually let him go play the video game. Isn't that positively reinforcing negative behavior? Also, he was probably like 5 or 6, a little old to be behaving like a toddler.

    ITA!
I think most of the problem with these kids is that the parents don't handle the situations or they just act like it's normal.

Well, yeah 5 or 6 is a bit too old for that!! And once you give in to them, then they know they just need to kick up a fuss and then they get what they want. Bad precedent!

Yeah I think it really depends on the age. If it was a toddler, there's not much you can really do about such behavior except try to curb it by ignoring it -- sometimes saying NO to a toddler makes them want to do it even more. The whole video game thing is a nightmare though, I have vowed to NEVER get my son a handheld because I have seen kids at restaurants literally glued to them even while WALKING around the restaurant.

Judging parenting is a really ticky tacky subject though -- I used to think that all bad behavior was because of parents, but it's hard to say that when you become a parent. Obviously if the parent is enabling things such as drinking and drug use, etc. that is a different story, but otherwise I try to stay away from judging because I'm sure others might think the same about me at times and I know that I'm doing my best...

You know what gets me frustrated about out of control kids? When they're at my store touching and playing with everything in life. They swear like it's the playground. And then, when I tell the parents for the kid to be careful cause the item can break, they look at me like I'm crazy. UGH.

That's why I am SO afraid to have children... I just don't have the patience for that kind of behavior...

    But that's just me...

^^lol! I didn't like kids at all before. No time for them. Thought they're a nuisance. But when you have your own, it's COMPLETELY different!

yea its really annoying but yea this1chick is right its hard to judge someone else's parenting when you're a parent yourself... but 5 or 6 is deifinitely old to be still throwing tantrums...

One example is during my DS's birthday all the family was gathered around the cake for my dS to blow the candle, and my friend's 5 year old son was right there behind the cake, amidst all the family... and my friend wasn't doing anything about it....

HA! talk about misrepresented pavlovian conditioning. I've seen a lot of parents fell on this trap, kids running wild in public, the parents being embarrassed eventually giving in to the brat. So in return, the brat realizes that he/she could get anything he/she wants as long as he/she misbehaves in public coz mom and dad are too embarrassed to reprimand their a**es

to answer the question, not really, I give them time and silently cheer on them when they discipline those little "terrorists" (atta mom).
