    Default Tanning salons?

Do any of you ladies tan at salons? I am interested in using tanning beds but I have mixed feeling about them. I would appreciate some input!

I go to a tanning bed about 1 time per week. It's not bad unless you over-do it.

If you're new to tanning, I recommend not going more than 5-6 minutes in a regular bed.

I honestly can not say anything positive about tanning beds. The last time I went to my Oncologist there was tons of information on the reasons why you should NOT tan and all of the different kinds of cancers that can result.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but I am totally against it.

I go once, sometimes twice a week if I have an event to go to and in the summer I layout on the weekends. Tanning isn't good for you per-say, but if you don't do it everyday, or don't over do it, I have no problem with it. I hate the way the lotions and sprays smell, even the ones that "don't smell" stink.

    Just be smart about it.

There was a really good article about all the different types of cancers you can get from indoor tanning in one of my past Women & Cancer magazines. I can't seem to locate it but here are some links.

    PLEASE read them.

    updated 1:52 p.m. ET, Wed., July 29, 2009

LONDON - International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.

For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.

"People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds," said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. "We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don't think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan."

I am with ZG on this 100%. Once a week or even fewer than that...it does not matter...using rays to artificially get a tan is not worth the health risks.

I was born with tanned skin...LOL. But even otherwise i would never treat my skin to any radiations of any sort. I think everyone looks gorgeous with good healthy skin....irrespective of it being dark or fair.

Deysa, spray tanning is another option.

Also against the recommendation from above ( ), I would recommend getting a little bit of tanning bed sun if you're planning on going on a vacation or spending alot of time in the outdoor sun, so you don't burn as easily.

Also remember to wear eyewear. Eye cancer is another thing you need to be aware of

i used to go ALOT during high school especially when a dance was coming up. My skin tans very easily and I get dark very quickly. I stopped going as much because of the unhealthy nature of it, and opt for real sun when I can. I still have my monthly membership and I pay $20 a month and there have been months I havent even gone so often over the last year. My uncles girlfriend has melanoma and went through a lot of surgeries and treatments over the last 2-3 years and is finally cancer free after tumors on her brain, lungs, legs, and back removed. I feel bad going after seeing what she has been through. I also have a horrendous mole I've had since I was a baby thats raised and looks bad (and always has) but lately I've been really conscious of it.

I went tanning last month to get a base tan to go to Florida to save me from burning, didn't need to however because it never got above 55 there, so no laying out haha! Of course my face did get burnt driving around in the golf cart pretty bad. I'm going to Florida again Friday and I will probably go 2-3 times this week to get a slight base since the temperature is up and I will probably be in the sun more.

I can't wait to move to Florida/ warm weather so I can cancel that membership and get the free (and slightly healthier) color from the sun!

I've never tried spray tanning, but I have my father's skin so I tan easily, but my mother is redheaded and pale, even with tanning its hard for her to get a lot of color, she uses these towels call Tan Towels that work wonders, she will look just as dark as me in minutes and they are much easier to apply without streaks/mess than cremes and lotions
