I'm pale, and have always been. It takes a while for me to get tan, and if I don't wear any sunscreen I burn. I'm in the "high risk for skin cancer" category because of the light hair/light eyes/light skin. It would be nice to be tan, but the tanning bed scares me. I've never been, and never plan on going. I'm not going to pay money to get skin cancer. That's how I see it. Being vain and needing to be tan isn't worth the price of your health. If being "tan" is considered the epitome of beauty, and people who are fairer skinned feel they need to go tanning all the time to be "beautiful," they're just asking to get skin cancer. I wear sunscreen when I go out in the sun, and limit my exposure when I'm out so that I just get some tan lines and not burnt.

If you naturally have a medium skin tone, I definitely recommend getting a spray tan or self tanner. It won't look unnatural. This way, you can look tan before you go on vacation or to the beach, and then you can get a natural tan while you're there.

Tanning beds, oh tanning beds. There's alot of strong against arguments above, now it's my turn.

My opinion on tanning beds is why not. I always stop in before I go on vacation. You have to get your skin ready for the climate change..I don't want to run into the risk of getting burned. Also I would not suggest getting a spray tan if you haven't been in the sun for a while and you plan on hitting the beach. Your skin will still not be use to the sun, you'll burn and it would just peel off leaving you with blotchy skin.

About the danger? The key is moderation. Sure there's the warning of harmful rays that may lead to skin or eye cancer, premature aging of the skin, etc but wear sunblock or a good tanning lotion and always wear eyewear. If you don't go in every day you'll be fine.

Also did you also know that just because it's winter doesn't mean you're safe from the sunrays? The sun is as harmful during the winter as it is during the summer. Although when you burn during the summer, that's another story.

    I love tanning beds.

I go in a tanning bed about once ever 2 weeks. It feels good to get a little bit of sun.

Bella, i agree with your statement that things should be done in Moderation...but for some things there is no moderation....it is simply No.

and IMO tanning, cigarettes, recreational drugs are all in that category. The cons far far outweigh the pros (if you consider looking tanned as being an imp. factor).

No offense intended. Those of you ladies who go to tanning salons and plan to continue doing so, best wishes to stay healthy and safe
