Default pre-existing condition -- insurance company

Have any of you had an issue with your insurance company claiming something is a "pre-existing condition"? I'm so upset right now...

Last year sometime when I was still on my parents insurance plan I went to see a doctor at the E Clinic. He never any tests. All he did was prescribe me pain medication as well as medication for acid reflux. He never actually said I had it. He said take the pills and we will see. I didn't take the pills and the pain just seemed to go away.

Fast forward to 2 months ago when I decided to get my own health insurance. I've been having some issues with my throat.. so I went and saw a different doctor, a specialist at the University of Washington. He looked down my throat with the endoscope and said I mostlikely have silent acid reflux. So he prescribed me some medication.. which I started taking but didn't really see in any results for 2 weeks, so I decided to get a second opinion.

I scheduled to go see a specialist at the E Clinic, because I felt a lump in my throat and whenever I swallow my throat pops. After a while it becomes painful, like I feel like my throat is bruised. Anyways so I went in a couple days ago and really it was the worst visit ever. I was in there for 5 minutes max (at the UW clinic I was there for at least an hour). Soon as I walked in, I told the nurse who comes in before the doctor, that I was basically there to get a second opinion. She leaves to get the doctor, 3 seconds later they are outside the door going over my chart: I can hear everything! The nurse was telling the doctor that there wasn't really anything they can do for me because I already went to the UW clinic. (what people don't get second opinions these days?!)

She comes in, doesn't say anything really except asking me to put my head back. (no hello or asks me why I'm there). Sprays my nose with that awful numbing stuff that tastes like crap and makes it hard to talk. Then she started talking... she said "I see you went to see Dr. X at UW. We work with them all the time... we actually send all our patients there... our equipment isn't as as good and not as accurate.. so I'm sure what he told you is correct". Before I can respond she started stabbing me with the scope thing.. and I told her that the popping hasn't stopped! I was kinda pouting in pain (no kidding their equipment isnt as good. It felt like she was stabbing a pencil up my nose!) then she was like "oh you have a deviated septum, that's why it hurts so much". What? How? I don't even think she knew what she was talking about. I don't think people are just born with that.. and last time I checked I haven't had any trauma to the head. Towards the end she again said, Dr X had the right diagnosis and I should continue taking the pills for at least a month. Then she said as for the popping it may be cartilage... then I asked so what can be done. And she says "nothing"! Some people just go throughout their life with a popping throat. I repeated what she said to me, in like a you're retarded tone, then said, are you serious? So by the time I'm 70 I will be in constant pain 24/7. That does not make sense. I just left it at that. I had to leave. I couldn't listen to her anymore.
(**breathe**)
Then today, I get a letter from my insurance company... ... "An EDIT TO THE ORIGINAL BILL" THEY SENT ME! Apparently my visit to Dr. X at the UW clinic is not covered because they consider it a pre-existing condition. And it's a huge f*ing difference. Like a couple thousand. And I'm super freaking out because I went in for my second opinion a few days ago!!! O.M.G.

Have any of you gone through the process to claim something was not a pre-existing condition? I don't know if I really have a case. The original doctor said it could be..it was like, lets see if this works.

Hmm... I've never heard of an insurance company not covering treatment for a pre-existing condition. Or are they arguing because it's like you're trying to get a diagnosis for something you have already been diagnosed with?
Well, anyway, I've never heard of such a thing. What kind of insurance is this? Or is it not really insurance, but one of those medical discount plans?
I'm sorry you're having trouble with this Jennifer. I don't know what else to say...
If you were poor like me, I'd tell you to see if the university can write your treatment off in a grant. We had the entire bill waived at the hospital when Mr BRS cut his finger really bad.

That sucks. First of all sorry about your throat. I can imagine how miserably it hurts.

I have had problems with Doctor offices (especially pediatricians) with regard to the treatment handled by nurses. When my son was 3 and was being given a shot, he got terrified and started crying when he saw the needle. the nurse yelled at him and asked him to stop being a baby . I was livid with fury. As i was leaving the doctors office i told the Manager (all doctor offices have one for admin and accts.) that if that nurse did not like kids she needs to get her ass out of there and into some other profession.

The deal about "pre-existing" condition is a bucketload of BS. They are just trying to get away with not providing coverage for a qualified person. I have fought with insurance companies with regard to medical bills and I have gotten my coverage. the key Jennifer is not not talk to the doctor's office or the customer service rep. of the insurance company. Directly write a letter or contact the Vice President of Claims or customer relations. They are the ones who call the shots anyway. No point trying to argue with a person lower on the totem pole, you will get nowhere. If you contact the top boss and make enough of a stink about their coverage, ethics(or lack of it), they will step up to the plate. Good Luck.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I hate, I mean HATE dealing with insurance companies!! I haven't had to deal with pre-existing conditions although that is one of my fears (with my cancer history) since Mr. Z's company changed to Anthem (which STINKS) insurance this year.
I had to go back to my doctor Monday and as he read the report from the specialist, that HE sent me to, he kind of chuckled and said he would like to get a second opinion! I was like WHAT? I had to go to this bozo Dr. "specialist" that also sprayed this nasty tasting numbing stuff up my nose then jabbed the longest thing through my nose and down the back of my throat!! Then he was like I really need to do another ultrasound. I was like what was wrong with the very thorough, 30 minute one I had at the hospital 2 weeks ago? Well I really need to see something. So he does his ultrasound for less than 60 seconds and goes "Yes, that is exactly what it is. Hashimotos Thyroiditis disease." I was like...well that was fast. So it all came down to him getting to charge me a few hundred dollars more for his ultrasound. Oh and I can't even remember what the charge was for the "surgery" (the thing they jabbed up through my nose and down the back of my throat).

Sorry for ranting, but I do feel for you having to deal with all of this. It seems like that is all I have done for the past 3 years.

Talk to a manager at your insurance company and also your doctor (not the office staff) and maybe they can get this settled for you.

BRS, the reason why my insurance company (blue shield) said it's considered a pre-existing condition, is because when I was shopping around for a new plan on my own I was without insurance for a couple months. So now I'm expected to wait, I think it's like 6 months or something. I knew this. But I didn't think it would apply because the doctor didn't officially diagnose me with ARD and didn't perform any tests. Also the first bill that they sent me said that it was covered. Then, of course my bad luck right after getting the second opinion, I get this letter saying it's not.

FU, that is a good idea. My first step is going to be to contact my insurance broker. The person who found me my current insurance plan.. I guess I will see what she says first, then do email. Uhg.

Z, isn't that numbing stuff awful! And yeah wth, that's what is sounds like he tried on you. Just to get that extra charge in there.

I just know I'm going to get another charge for my second visit. I mean I heard them say there's nothing they can do for me, and that is exactly how she treated me. Come to think of it I don't even think she looked at the screen. She didn't go over any results with me. It was so weird. (And oh my gosh, I just remembered that I went in for an ultrasound on my throat. I hope they try not to say that they wont cover that also! )

No but that's ridiculous. I'm sorry you're having that pain and having to deal with those stupid people.

Well Jennifer, all I have to say is FedUp is right. It's nothing but a bunch of BS! Definitely make a huge stink about it with someone in charge. And don't give up! We had a situation with Mr BRS's wisdom teeth being removed. The dental insurance was trying to classify the removal of one of his four teeth as "surgery" and they said that our medical insurance should cover it. Well my medical insurance didn't want to cover it because it was a dental thing. The dental insurance wanted a written statement from the medical insurance that they will not cover the procedure and the medical insurance was refusing to send one. Long story short... it took 8 months before we finally got the whole thing settled. But we fought the entire time to get what was rightfully ours. It took awhile, but we made it happen. So don't give up!

^^^ I agree, fight for it. Eventually, you'll "get to them", they just expect you to not even bother.

I swear Insurance Companies are such a HASSLE. If you are ill/sick they make you even sicker than you are because you are WORRIED about the bill etc.

Jennifer -- I am sorry you are having such issues -- ugh !!

I had a problem last year with my Podiatrist and then again with the regular Doctor .
I was billed for THREE ULTRASOUNDS for my left foot (only needed ONE ) and then
quadruple billed for some allegy TESTS !!!

I had to fight and fight with the insurance company about getting the extra charges off my bill !! UGH
