Well I finally decided to have my wisdom teeth taken out. My teeth have always come in really slowly, so it wasn't until last year that the bottom ones even started to show up on the xray. I have one that is already in, one that is trying to come in, and 2 on the bottom that are growing in sideways.
Needless to say, I have to get them out, or the thousands of dollars my parents spent on braces is going to go in vain.
Who here has had them out? Any tips or advice?
I'm a huge baby, and have never been put under, so I'm pretty much scared. It's the lack of control thing I guess. They said I'll only be under for about an hour, but still
I had mine out like 5 years ago. I was also put under anesthesia because I didn't want to be awake for the whole thing. You won't feel a thing and the fact that you're going to be put out makes the procedure easy for you. It's the pain afterwards that stinks. You'll probably get Vicodin to help manage the pain. You can't eat much besides shakes and soft food. I think all I ate was mashed potatoes for like a week. Good luck!!

I had mine out quite a few years ago, and it went very smoothly for me. I was put under and don't remember anything until being in the car with my mom. I wasn't in very much pain afterwards at all. And I was eating normal foods again in a couple days. You do have to be careful though when chewing. I'm sure everyone's experience will be different, but I hope yours goes very well!
Honestly, it was the easiest procedure I've ever done. The dentist knocked me out and then next thing I knew I was waking up. I didn't even know it had been done until the dentist had told me. I also had no pain. The most I felt was a little discomfort and I didn't even need the pain killers I was given. The only problem I had was with chewing food. I had to eat soft food for about a week or else I would get food stuck in the gums.
The most important thing to remember is to relax. It's easy to get yourself worked up on worries you have (I did that before I went in), but try not to. Once it is over you'll probably think, "That was easier than I thought!"
i never had mine taken out before but my sister did and she was put under and she didn't remember a thing. she had to eat like soft foods though, like what everyone said. i'm sure yours will go well!

I'm a mutant or something. I only have one wisdom tooth and the others are completely absent. The dentist thinks its unlikely they will ever show up since I'm almost 28 now. Anyway, the one that I do have is a little deformed and it's there but I haven't done anything about it yet (it's bud appeared when I was 15 and popped out in my early 20's). Since it's technically not hurting anything at the moment, I don't plan on having anything done with it unless it starts causing a problem. Mr BRS, on the other hand, had 4 wisdom teeth and he had all of them removed at the same time. He was awake for the whole thing and he said it really wasn't that bad. I guess it's better to have them removed though when they are still buds because they are still soft and easy to take out. He had one that still hadn't surfaced and he said that one was a snap. The other three took some prying, but apparently they came out pretty quickly too. He went to an oral surgeon to have it done though, so I imagine this guy had his technique down pretty good.
I had mine taken out several years ago because they were pressing down on my nerve and causing severe migraine headaches. It was a very simple procedure and even the recovery was not too bad. Your jaw area will be swollen for a few days and till the anesthetic wears off you will feel funny and woozy.
All in all, if you have has braces put in and you could stand that pain, this won't be such a great deal.
take care. Good Luck

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. It really helps to hear about your experiences, or about people you know. Even if you haven't had yours out or have them, I still like to hear about it :)
I told my mom I would I would much rather spend the money on a purse, but she told me that wasn't a good idea.
The oral surgeon was really nice when I went to my consultation, and I definitely think he'll do a good job, and I have every confidence in him, I'm just nervous.
I got mine all four of mine when I was 15...so 4+ years ago. I was put to sleep while they operated. I remember my cheeks hurting really bad and not being able to open my mouth much. The pain didn't kick in until the night I had my surgery. Also, my cheeks swelled up and they were huge!! It was really embarrassing. It was almost a month before I could actually chew normal foods. Hopefully your experience will be better than mine. I hated it!!
Some tips:
get a variety of Gatorade
get a variety of SOFT food that you can basically chew with your tongue, lol
DO NOT touch your cheeks
try to brush your teeth no matter how much it hurts, otherwise, your mouth will taste nasty
I hope your dental visit goes well. I got wisdom teeth out about 7 years ago. The surgery was fine . I didn't even go under , I was just numbed up very well. It hurt after the surgery , but it was bearable.
I'm sorry to hear that Jess. It's funny how different people react differently. Mr BRS had a little bit of swelling on the one side for maybe a day. After that, you couldn't even tell. He only ate soft foods for 5 days or so, I don't even think it was a week. He said that it hurt for the first few days, but it wasn't completely unbearable.

Yeah...my sister-in-law had 2 of her's out last year, and the next day she went to work. I hated having them out, but I'm glad I had them out earlier so I wouldn't have to take time off of work and all that.
