^^ The shingles are also connected with the pox... I'm not sure how, but they are somehow. I had shingles a few years ago. Was stressed out over about 4 different huge things and they broke out on the left side of my head and face. It was horrible!!

My doctor has always required it. I have to get a vaccine every 13 or so years since I've never had them.. I thought all kids who've never had them got the shot.

IF my children attended a public school I would have to argue it. It really makes me mad too. I don't believe in chicken pox and flu vaccines.

My understanding is that shingles are the grown-up version of chicken pox. It's better to get the pox when they are young because apparently shingles can be life threatening.

Yeah, it is better to get the chicken pox when you're younger as opposed to shingles. I bet she's enjoying that ice cream!!

Chicken pox is actually a herpes virus. You can only get shingles if you had chicken pox as a child. When you have the chicken pox, your immune system will suppress it. The virus never actually goes away, hence you typically don't get the chicken pox again. Shingles is an outbreak caused by the chicken pox virus that is already in your body. It usually occurs much later in life though (e.g. grandma gets it). I guess stress could cause it to happen though too, I'm not sure.

When I had chicken pox, Calamine lotion helped a lot. Soothed the itching pretty well.

I missed this post earlier. Sorry to hear that Maeveyblue but yeah definitely better to get chicken pox when you're younger than as an adult, as there are more complications post infection.
Treatment is just as with any other viral illness, symptomatic relief. So if she's itchy, calamine lotion really helps and distracting activities to take her mind off the itchiness. Lots of fluid(ice cream has fluid too you know), rest and if she's still feverish, paracetamol for that.
Shingles is due to reactivation of the chicken pox virus that is dormant in the spinal cord. Stress, low immune system and old age can trigger this, science still can't explain why some get it and some don't. Certain individuals are more susceptible than others.
I was somewhat relieved DS had his a few months ago(outbreak at nursery), at least that is out of the way

I hope your daughter is feeling better. I may be crazy but I have fond memories of when I had the chicken pox, lol. I can even remember my nightgown I wore. Back when I was a kid they didn't have the vaccine, it was the 70's and people used to try to expose their kids to the chicken pox to get it over with. It took two different exposures for me to get it. One failed and so my mom took me to my cousins house when she got it, we sat close and shared a snack lol. I think I was 9 yrs. old and I remember enjoying the baths and thinking how funny I looked w/ my face all dotted. My mom didn't let us take baths ordinarily only showers so it was a treat to take the special bath. As for why my mom didn't let us take baths and had us shower instead bec. she was under the assumption that a bath is like sitting in your own dirty water, I on the other hand think baths are just fine, lol. I was actually going to take my 3 yr. old this week for his chicken pox vaccine, he's not in school yet, but he'll need it before starting school in the fall.
