    Hi everyone,
Could someone help authenticate this bag please? My roommate just bought it from eBay but is now suspicious of its authenticity. The bag hasn't arrived yet though so I can't provide better pictures of the bag or the inside patch but does it even look like something Coach ever made? Will provide better pictures once available.
Do you guys know if it's not authentic would ebay purchase protection cover it? Or would she just have to try to get rid of it herself somehow. Thanks a bunch!

^^^ Looks like a fishy patchwork to me. I would wait for the bag to come, but you can file a dispute through ebay saying the item is not as described (assuming the listing said it was authentic).

Hello, I am new to this forum. And I wish I found out about this forum before buying anything off eBay. So I recently purchased 2 purses on eBay, both sellers had reputable feedbacks, but both these totes have something "off" about them. I hope I can get some insight from ya'll. Thank you very much.

Default Help identifying if this is a real coach bag!

I'd been looking for a leather bag for a while and came across this green one in a thrift store. I'm just really curious to see if you think it's real or not- I love it either way- It's held up great for me. Any help is appreciated! Zipper pull inside has chain type loops on it (zipper is only for small coin area where emblem is printed) and it has a gold/metal magnectic clasp for the flap. Very worn, soft, thick, green dyed leather in a saddlebag type design. Thanks!

This is an unusual bag, but I think it is authentic.

    Hi there!

I'm new user to the forums though I have visited a few times in the past.

I made a purchase a while back at my local second hand consignment store and this is what I bought:

    Pictures:

    (front)
    (back)
    (side / hardware)
    (inside / creed)

The creed picture isn't very clear as the room isn't well-lit and my camera just hates taking all-dark pictures.

The COACH stamp at the top is a bit light (as in the stamp doesn't seem to be imprinted too strongly) and this is what the creed says:

    COACH

THIS IS A COACH BAG. IT WAS HANDCRAFTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF COMPLETELY NATURAL GLOVE-TANNED COWHIDE. THE VARIATIONS IN THE GRAIN ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF NATURAL FULL-GRAIN LEATHER.

    No. D6B 9974
    Description:

    From what I can tell:

The bag is an all-leather bucket style with a rectangular bottom and features a drawstring closure.

The leather is thick and mostly supple with a bit of stiffness and the outside is the 'smooth' side of the leather while the inside is the raw-feeling suede side.

It has brass hardware on the buckles and eyelets on the strap and the leather drawstring closure has 'arrow' shaped ends on both ends of the leather string.

The flap that has the creed embossed (is it called embossing?) is on the inside on the 'back' side of the bag like in the picture shown and the flap has a single pocket.

The bag is approximately 11 inches tall in height by 9 inches in width (across the bag) by 5 inches wide (short width).

The strap of the bag is long enough for crossbody though I suspect over-the-shoulder would work best.

    -----

Is it possible for someone to help me authenticate and/or identify this bag if only for my own purposes?

Please and thank you in advance!

Yeah, your pic of the creed is blurry. I looked around and it appears #9974 belongs to a little square shaped bag with a zipper. If you do a search on ebay, bags similar to yours pop up with style #9952.

    @ boysRsmelly

I looked that up, too, and found similar which is why I ended up coming over here to see if anyone would have insight. I didn't mention it on the first hand because I wanted to see if anyone else would think similarly without it being pointed out. Frankly, I'm quite puzzled by this.

I consider myself to be in-the-know when it comes to leather goods (I am a big leather fan and have done actual small-accessory work and modification with leather) and at the very least, the leather is of very excellent quality. The stitching is very consistent from the straps to the bottom of the bag to the flap. The brass hardware is genuine brass.

I don't suppose there would be any other way to tell aside from the creed in this case?

The saleslady who sold it to me said it came from an older woman who frequently resold a lot of her old brand name merchandise to her store.

If it's the real deal, then hooray. If it's a fake, it's a fake and I'm still fine with it. Either way, I bought the bag because I was firstly admiring the quality of the leather work on it.

I just don't want to one day sell this bag to someone else and say it's the real deal when it isn't.

The fact that the style number doesn't appear to match the style really bothers me. I think what is throwing me off is that the strap and hardware are very Coach-like. Could you try taking a better pic of the creed?

    Hi there!

I really appreciate you continuing to help me look into this.

I managed to get a good shot of the creed:

It's stamped/embossed in the middle of the inside flap.

I'm just stumped. The leather quality, the stitching (it matches the 9952's to a T - especially when comparing the side stitching and bottom stitching and strap stitching), the hardware (down to the number of eyelets used) matches the 9952's. If the bag is a fake, whoever crafted it sure went to an awful lot of trouble (and quality leather) to do it.

Are there any resources (pictures, for example, or even descriptions) in regards to fake 9952s or similar bags?

And yes, the non-matching serial number bothers me, too.

@ boysRsmelly and anyone else who might be looking:

I took some more pictures of the detailing of the bag - in particular, the stitching (outside and inside), the suede/raw unlined inside, and 'inside the leather' as well.

    CREED:

OUTSIDE, TOP, BACK, HOLES & STITCHING:

    BOTTOM & STITCHING:

    INSIDE, TOP, HOLES & STITCHING:

    INSIDE, SIDE, DRAWSTRING & STITCHING:

    STRAP, UNDERSIDE, STITCHING:

Thank you again for your time; I really appreciate it.

I don't think I have ever felt so conflicted about something as I do right now.

On the one hand, I see that the serial number doesn't match the item. On the other hand, I see and feel that the overall quality of the bag from materials to craftsmanship is very solid and very Coach-like. I have actually worked in the handbags department (amongst other departments) of a large upscale department store before and have thus handled and encountered a lot of genuine designer bags of all sorts and if it weren't for the serial, this one sure looks and feels real.

The leather quality - as I have tried to show in the pictures - is very solid. (If someone who is a leather expert can chime in and either affirm or inform me otherwise, I would really appreciate it!) There is no 'perfection' in the material, there is a good amount of 'rawness' to the unlined and unfinished interior, and and the overall variance in the material appearance is what I would expect from a similar leather product. The bag - where it doesn't weigh a ton - is certainly heavy enough when compared to a similar leather product.

The stitching on the overall bag from inside to outside to the strap to even the inside side seam is very even and neat. There is no double stitching, there are no knots, there is no zig-zagging strangeness. The stitching patterning and style (eg: inside side seam, bottom bag stitching, top bag stitching, strap stitching) matches that of the 9952.

The strap - I actually detached it from the bag and stretched it out to look - is very consistent all around in its stitching like the rest of the bag is and even the underside looks consistent. The brass hardware used for the eyelets and for the buckle is as brass as the hardware on my other Coach bag (which is definitely a Coach as I bought it from the store itself) and it matches the brass hardware found on other 9952s that I have seen pictures of.

Basically, to my eyes and senses, all the things I know and knew to look out for in a genuine well-crafted leather article and in a Coach product are being demonstrated by this bag.

    And... yet.

The un-matching serial number suggests that the bag is a fake.

If this fake looks and feels the way it does, this makes me feel very wary of purchasing other secondhand leather Coach goods. Obviously, in the future, I will keep an eye out for the serial numbers before I buy anything, but sometimes, I don't always get that chance to (like this time).

If this bag is a fake, then I feel betrayed almost. Not by the bag as I had originally picked it up for the leather and not because of its branding, but by my own senses. That my own senses and experience with handling leather of all sorts and designer handbags of all sorts couldn't prevent me from encountering a fake.

The things that everyone says to look out for and even the smaller details (like the stitching in more obscure locations, alignment of things, quality in the smaller details, etc) were things that slipped by me with an A-OK.

Am I seeing things that aren't there? Is there something else obviously wrong about this bag that I'm just not seeing? Are there other ways to tell? How did I miss this? Are there other similar fakes (if this one's a fake) that would slip by unnoticed because the seeming quality really seems comparable to the official quality? Are there any other ways to tell if the bag is a fake - especially leather Coach bags?

I actually feel bad for the bag. For what I picked it up for, it's certainly worth it even without the Coach label. But the addition of the Coach label almost 'dirties' it if it turns out to be a fake. If it were a fake, having NO label would be preferable because if someone asked me if it's a Coach or a 9952, I could just say, "No," and be 'honest' about it. I would just have a beautifully-crafted black leather drawstring bag. But with the Coach label, if someone were to ask me and if I said no, that label would always be in the back of my mind and if someone asked to see my bag and they saw the label...

    Oh well. Live and learn.

Sorry about the wall of text; I didn't mean to write a novel.

To answer your question, I have no clue if fake ones of this style were ever made. There really isn't any sort of resource out there for that kind of stuff. You just have to be really familiar with the bags and, unfortunately, this is one that I am not all that familiar with. I am much better with the newer Coach styles, rather than the classic leather. Hopefully someone who is more familiar will chime in, I know it is still the holidays so people aren't all that active at the moment.

Thanks for your answer and the time you've put in to help me figure things out; I really super appreciate it.

I will be patient and wait to see if someone else who specializes more with the classic leather might be able to chime in and provide more insight.
