    Default Suze Orman denied Chanel

I just got done watching the Suze Orman show and there is a segment when people call in and ask if they can afford something that they want. A 23 year old girl called in and wanted to buy a $650 Chanel bag. She was denied....

Think she'll buy it anyways? I would. You only live once and you can't take money with you when you die

If you have a family to support and bills to pay, you don't. JMO. I really watch what I purchase and make sure we have the extra funds.

LOL The problem is that if she is 23 she shouldn't still be living with her parents. She should be investing her money in a house or condo so she has equity.
    Again, JMO.
    And yes, everything in moderation.

maeveyblue you are correct. (and so is suze)

when i look at a woman carrying a designer bag, it doesn't get her automatic respect from me.

if you're talking about someone who is in a position to, yes.

but someone who is not in a position to, who chooses to splurge irresponsibility for vanity over other responsibilities, no.

i am not a fan of the carrie bradshaw way of life because the reality is such.... people are finding it tougher to survive in their winter years. in the movies it always looks peachy whereas in reality, your caviar jumbo is not going to feed you, clothe you, pay for the med bills, education, etc....

so yes, everything in moderation is good. a 23 year old carrying a chanel.. is an excess for me.

Unless they are a Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. But that is an oddity. And again, that isn't to say that there aren't wealthy 23 year olds who have the money to burn. But other things need to be taken into account first and dealt with.

I agree... because if your calling to ask for an opinion, then your obviously not sure if it's the right thing to do, or not.

I wonder what Chanel bag cost $650???!!! That's pretty cheap for a Chanel.

Anyways, I think if you have responsibilities such as, Children or a Spouse that you support or needs your help financially, then you should always keep them as your first and main responsibility... of course. Now if you have extra money to spend, why not buy something you like, even if it is a splurge! That girl needs to find this forum... quick!!!

I just felt kind of bad ... I am 24 but married, grad from college, good job and no kids of my own. If all she got was the one bag that is fine. If she just got bag after bag then its bad.

I can't imagine living with my parents at my age... I love them but I was ready and moved 800 miles from them when I was 18 ... And paid my own way and emerged with only $1500 in student loans.

Everyone is different. I like watching the "Can I afford it" segment but just felt bad that a fellow bag lover was denied.

i dont have much respect for those two or lindsay lohan. look at the way they behave... lindsay proudly exclaimed how she has her orange birkin "at the bottom of the cupboard somewhere". i've seen paris hilton in person and boy does she look awful. she is the epitome of indignity....

they look extremely tacky, too much money too little class. all that branded stuff can do nothing for them.

which is why i'm here, i prefer to see well grounded women and how they carry the bag. i dont benchmark a nice bag according to what the latest shoe-in wore. if not i'll google "paris hilton+chanel" rather than talk to real proper women about it.

maybe it's just me, but i like to see well rounded, classy, traditional ladies wearing branded stuff.

I think if people call Suze Orman...then they are smart about their finacial decisions and how it will effect them, which is good.

Lol, I was wondering the same thing about a $650 Chanel...maybe it's vintage?

I think it was really tiny..I didn't get a good look at the bag...I didn't have my glasses on and they just have a tiny picture off to the side with the girls financial items below.

I don't see what the big deal is about buying a designer handbag when you're young. I'm 23 and have a few Chanel bags that are worth more than the $650 this girl was going to spend. I don't have anything to pay for, just a few bills (cable, electric, etc.), so I think it's perfectly fine to buy the things I want, no matter what the cost is (within reason of course).

I don't think that when you're 23 you should not be spending money on things you want, or saving up for a house or condo. I also disagree with the comment that you shouldn't be living with your parents at that age. It's a personal choice of where someone wants to live, and if it's with their parents then good for them. Plus, if they have a great family and they want to be with them, then maybe it's just not their time to "leave the nest."

I always think of parents though...I mean, yes they love their kids and all but I would be ready when my child (hypothetical - I don't have any children of my own) is 18 for my husband and I to have time together to do what we want without an adult child living with us. After 18 years, it's time not to have to pay for food/clothing/shelter of your child...they are GROWN!!!

Then again, if the child was too lazy to find their own place/in college/showed no interest in leaving I wouldn't be like "hey get out of my house"...I would start charging rent and keep increasing it to the point where they would be better off living alone.

This generation coming out, many of which are my peers (I am 24) show reluctance to leave mom and dad's house and I really don't get it. Is it just that it is easier?

I know there are a lot of Families where the Parent(s) don't want their Children to leave. To me when you have a close relationship with your Family and love being together you shouldn't have to leave home because that's what society says.
I think that every woman deservs to have at least one designer bag, besides coach and DandB, and I hope she gets that bag for herself or maybe someone can give it to her as a gift.
If you have responsibilities of course you have to be smart but I would hope that everyone would have some extra money for themselves every now and then so they can get their Prada, Chanel, Vuitton, Hermes, Fendi, BBag or Dior bag. Or at the least a day at the spa. I have responsibilities to myself and 3 precious lives and I make sure we 4 always have what we want and need.
