Ok, I've decided to dye my hair jet black. Currently, it's a dark brown (you can see it from my profile pic) and I think it'd look great if it was black. And I really want to do something new anyways. So it's time for a change!
This would be my first time doing this and I was wondering if anyone with experience could give me a few tips. First of all, do you recommend that I do it myself or go to a salon? I figure I could save a lot of money by doing it myself and since my hair is so dark, I think it would be hard to notice any "mistakes" if I made any. Also, do you know which brand to get? Are there any special tips/tricks that I should know of? Any advice would greatly be apprciated!!! ![]() |

Dying your hair such a dark color can be really tricky... I would say have a professional do it the first time around. If not at a salon, then perhaps you should try it with a temporary dye first. Then you can see if you like how it looks without completely ruining your hair.

currently I'm blonde, but I went dark dark brown and black for a bit, the initial change from blonde to dark was done at a salon and ended up tinging my hair a bit green, I hate when dull brown looks greenish, after that I used box dyes at home, my friend would always help me to ensure I got all of the spots and I'd end up using 1 1/2 boxes to cover my head. Big tip if you do it at home, make sure everything around you is covered, I ended up with a few spots on my shower curtain somehow and drips that fell on the tile grout of the floor permanently dyed that too. I used L'oreal brand color for a while and experienced with a range of colors but found great ones, but I can't remember the names. And Aveda Black Malva Conditioner is the best. You can do without the shampoo, but its a color depositing conditioner and if I used it for 3-5 minutes a day it dramatically changed my hair and let me hold out a but longer between dying it.

Oook... what a coincidence....
My hair "used" to be medium brown with golden highlights.... ....and then... I decided to go darker, since I was really hating the constant root touchups.... and it was costing me a lot of $$$ every freakin' month! So I dyed my hair... Dark Brown.... But it came out looking Black... I hate it!!!! I say if you want to go darker.... slowly increase the color of the dye... start off with the darkest brown... then brown black... soft black.... etc. I know I don't look horrible... since i've recieved a couple of compliments... but I wish I would have stayed with the color I had.... I agree with BRS... try buying a dark black temporary dye.... and if you like it... then dye it!!! Just becareful... It's not as easy as it sounds... Good Luck!!! ![]()

hey!
i just recently dyed my hair dark... not black but nearly black... i would suggest going to a salon especially if this is your first time.. otherwise make sure u have someone to help you if you're going to do it yourself... you might want to think about your decision to go black a little more.... once you go black its hard to go lighter again... it involves lots of highlights or stripping your hair.... If you get a colour that is ALMOST black.... like a REALLY dark brown... it will be easier for you if you ever want to go back again... that way you can let it fade and then dye it lighter browns... whether with black its hard for you to try and dye it lighter... it will just look blacker...

Thank you ladies for all of your advice! I greatly appreciate it! Everyone here gave me some awesome tips and now I feel more prepared for this change!
I think that I will go to a salon and have them dye it black. With me being half Asian, I don't think it could look bad. I'm thinking it would enhance my features and I'm pretty optimistic about it. Now my only other question is how much will this cost? And take into consideration that I have very long hair. I just hope it's not too expensive... ![]() |

I know this is a bit old, but try not to do it!!!!!
I have light brown hair naturally and have made the mistake of going red, them JET black......it has taken me about a year and a half to do blond.... If you ever want to go lighter, even get highlights it is going to be a nightmare... Once you add the black it is every hard to lift it out... Hope this helps!!! :)
