Okay...I admit, I am smart on many levels, but high fashion is not one. I can honestly say, and I am embarrassed to admit that I never heard of Balenciaga before joining this forum. I have a couple of questions:
I assume these are made in Italy. I also can tell from the pics that they are made of leather. How are these in comparison to say...Louis Vuitton or Gucci? Also, what makes the bags so popular? I think they are pretty and everything, don't get me wrong, but I am trying to understand everything.
What is the price range? Where does one find them? I don't have a Saks or Neiman Marcus close, but I can always take the train to Chicago one weekend !!!
Balenciaga is prized for its super soft, smooshy leather. It's goat, isn't it? And they do something special to stretch it and treat it to make is so soft and supple like it is. I've heard people say that nothing can compare to the feel of Balenciaga leather. Sorry... that's probably not a lot of help. LOL!

Ok... the leather is incredibly smooshy and soft... You can buy authentic Balenciaga's on Diabro.net, Aloha Rag (by calling their phone#), and Balenciaga New York. Or at high end department stores such as Neiman Marcus, and I believe Saks sells them too. I recieved a small booklet with a bit of care info on my Bbag when I bought her last year, here's what it reads:
"This leather item was created by expert craftsmen from carefully selected material. The special tanning process and later re-tanning with chrome and special oils leave the leather soft and smooth. Any irregularities are inherent features of the leather. This leather is naturally colour fast and is not subjected to protective and water-repellence treatments. The reactions to contact with water and the change in colour, a result of rubbing and above all use of the item, are to be considered aesthetic features that are a further guarantee of its genuine nature. The cracking texture is deliberately done in a non-uniform manner to achieve a vintage effect. Our staff is on hand for any further information and needs."
... and I hate being reminded, but the leather is made out of chevre... or goat...

Balenciaga leather is FABULOUS...I love their leather, it's so nice to touch, feels so thick and gorgeous, especially the older years. They hold up great under rain, although I always treat mine with Apple leather protectant spray. The colors are also great too, especially some of the gorgeous bright ones from this spring/summer!

The leather is amazing... but I'm drawn to bbags for the color. I would highly recommend you selecting a color (as opposed to a neutral) if you decide to purchase a bbag. Good Luck!
I have one and love it. But would I buy another one? Probably not. There are so many other barnds out there just waiting to be discovered and loved. Just my opinion though. I know there are those who will want me burned at the stake for saying that. And I do love my one bag.
