    Default Advice and Identification

    Hi all,

I recently purchased a large estate of designer handbags from the 50's up to about the 70's (I think those are the about the dates of most of them). Some of the names are Hermes, Tiffany and Co., Judith Leiber, Lederer, and Nettie Rosenstein. From the research I have attempted to do on them I couldn't find much of any information.

I can't find any Tiffany and Co. bags or Hermes bags that fit the style of the ones I have.

I have a pretty decent amount of money invested into this lot of handbags. I currently have them up on eBay.
My fear is that I am asking too much, or that it is not the right venue to sell them - maybe I need to go to a private auction house?

Does anyone know some of the bags that I have or could point me in the right direction?

I currently have the most valuable ones listed up on my eBay store right now - my store name is the same as my username, sweetkwak .. I am not trying to sell them on here, I just really need advice on the best possible means of selling them and possible identification.

I can't post photos of them since I have less then 10 posts.

Any help at all is much appreciated!

    Thank you!

I don't know much about vintage bags, but I'm wondering how you determined the prices you put on these pieces. I did a casual search of vintage Judith Leiber just to see the prices people were putting on stuff. All of the non-crystal encrusted bags are selling for much less than what you are asking. None of them are the same styles, I'm just looking at them in general.

Did you have any of these items appraised? I'm guessing you would need to see someone who deals in antiques, particularly vintage designer fashion.

Thank you very much for your response.

I did some searching online and I saw that prices did vary drastically. I know like many things condition plays a major role in the value of a piece. I also thought maybe since the pieces that I had were uncommon I would start the price on the higher side to play it safe. The last thing I would want to do is sell it for less then what it is worth.

I tried taking them to a high-end vintage boutique and the women really couldn't give me much help. She wanted a 40/60 split and told me I would make a good amount of money off of selling the lot if I went through her.

I guess my next step would actually be taking them to get appraised. My only problem is that I have a decent amount of capital tied up in this collection. I am not sure if it is worth paying for the price of an appraisal service, which can end up running a decent amount. Still at then end of the day, I can have an appraisal number but no place to sell.

Are there auction houses that specialize in handbags?

I don't know of any. Perhaps a consignment shop would offer a better deal?
