Default Re: I don't know what to do...

Susieq...

My job changes weren't that bad. They were rational. I went from a very small public accounting firm, to a large regional firm, which is a very good move and makes sense when you see it on paper. I didn't seek them out, btw...one of their partners called me because my former employer had put some sort of press release in the paper about a special second certification that I have. I was resistant then they took me to dinner and gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. Then, I moved from public accounting after gaining 2 years experience, which was required to get a license, to private accounting at a multinational corporation. I plan on staying here for at least 3 years (enough to vest my 5% Defined contribution pension plan, enough to get most of a master's) OR LONGER!! Depending if I get a controller position somewhere. If I can be a controller, I can see my tenure lasting 6-10 years or longer. Once stepkid is grown, I will volunteer to become expatriate and work abroad. I wouldn't mind living in Latin America or Asia...Canada is an option too which is probably more viable to me because our facility is in Montreal and I speak a little French (6 hours short of a french minor)...but not that exotic (I grew up 45 minutes from the border of Ontario to the US...we went shopping in Canada a lot when the CAD was low against the USD.)

A girl that graduated a year or two ahead of me, she wants to teach as well and what she did (but I am not going to do because I have a family to support) is she worked in each facet of accounting for a year (Audit, Tax, Cost management, budgeting, general...etc) and then went to get her doctorate.

I can teach at a community college with just a Masters...as long as I get the degree and it has 18 hours in my specialty. Also, teaching at a CC I can do that at night and I can add $10-$20K per year to my income, which isn't too shabby. If I want to pursue a doctorate later on (I will wait until my hubby is 50 so we can get health insurance through AARP ... which isn't that long away...let's say less than 12 years) then having the teaching base at the CC level gives you an edge over someone who's never really worked and just gone to school.

I think I know I have to do a Master of Science in Accounting. **Sigh** My school option is that I would have to go to a school that I really didn't like but they still have a great reputation. Or find a good accredited online program that I can do at my own pace.
