Which leads one to really know the person you spend that kind of money on. And even more so if you are going to give them a family heirloom that means something to the family. I had a friend give his ex finacee a family ring and he was not able to get it back. And he took her to court and everything. It was really sad and what a total waste of a human being she turned out to be.

Perhaps the rules are different in different states. Where I live, an engagement ring is a conditional gift that only becomes the property of the recipient after they have fulfilled their end of the contract (e.g. go through with the wedding). If the couple breaks up before the wedding takes place, the ring must be returned to the person who bought it (e.g. usually the man).
