I'm not sure about the hardware question. But about the leather: Yes, the vachetta will eventually acquire a beautiful patina as it oxidizes over time. I think Louis Vuitton bags look gorgeous after the leather has started to change. LV says you're not suppose to treat the leather but from what I've read and seen, I think that if you use the right products and do it correctly, it's a good idea. boysRsmelly actually did a post on a product that was specifically made for the leather handles/vachetta trim on Vuitton bags, and also an antibacterial treatment.
