I'm all pale and photosensitive and I have to wear sunglasses year-round, I actually keep two pairs next to me in my car all the time, one with lighter lenses for cloudy days and one with dark lenses for bright sunshine/sunsets. I used to need them to block the wind so I wouldn't get anything in my contacts, but I got LASIK a year and a half ago so that's not an issue, though I still love wind-blocking wrap-around styles. They're more of a neccessity for me than an accessory, and they take a lot of abuse. I've been sticking with my sporty Anarchy or Arnette brand sunglasses since I was a teenager. They're not as expensive as designer brands, (I'll spend something in the ballpark of $60-$150 for a new pair every couple years) which is good because they tend to get scratched after a while, but they are descent quality and don't fall apart like drugstore sunglasses. I go for styles similar to this, whether it's popular or not, because they are comfortable, practical and they flatter my face:
