Your friend can contact the store that she bought the Birkin from and ask for a reprint of the original receipt.

or whether we should just go to the local Sydney Hermes store and ask for the bag to be authenticated and get a proof of authenticity statement of some sort?
I don't understand why she would want to have the Birkin authenticate in Sydney if she bought it directly from a Hermes shop in the first place?? Buying from their boutique was already the best proof of authenticity unless she is planning on selling it later.... FYI, Hermes will not authenticate any bag that was not purchased from their shops and they will not write any authenticity statement for anyone. Just like LV does not provide this service either.

Finally, does anyone know whether a Birkin without a receipt makes any difference in terms of getting 'warranty' and future refurbishments? I guess Hermes is able to identify everything about the bag (which craftsman made it, when etc) without the receipt.
As long as the bag is authentic, Hermes will provide the service of polishing or refurbishing even if the bag is 30 or 40 years old.

Hope this helps
